Saalbach Hinterglemm is a massive ski resort located within a Austrian region of the same name. The resort itself is found not far from the famous city of Salzburg and those arriving here will be pleased to know that arriving to the resort requires only a short transfer from Salzburg Airport. The resort of Saalbach Hinterglemm (and indeed the surrounding regions) were made famous thanks to the 1991 FIS Alpine world Ski championships. Since this time, the resort and the slopes themselves have become world famous as being one of the top skiing destinations for both experts and novices alike.

Skiing Conditions and Trails at a Glance

The resort of Saalbach Hinterglemm is known as one of the premiere skiing location within all of Austria. There are currently no less than 270 kilometres of prepared slopes as well as 70 cable car lifts. However, the region is known for its diverse range of activities besides skiing alone. Saalbach Hinterglemm offers speeding slopes, those primarily designed for racing, snow trails, cross-country paths and even toboggan runs. The majority of the slopes are either found facing south or oriented north. The southern slopes are preferred by casual enthusiasts, as they tend to receive the most sun during the winter months. There is also a large snow park found within Saalbach Hinterglemm. This is primarily meant to cater to the needs of beginners and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Anyone with a considerable amount of experience will often choose the nearby snow park of Leogang. At this secondary location, there are more challenging courses as well as steeper slopes. Rails, jibs and kickers are also found within the Leogang area.

Accommodations

Another reason why so many prefer Saalbach Hinterglemm is that it boasts some truly luxurious accommodation options. Youth hostels, mountain huts, chalets, motels, bed-and-breakfast inns and standard hotels can all be chosen. As one can imagine, the prices will vary depending upon the type of room, the length of the stay and the season. Full- and half-board options are available and there are even some 5-star hotels located within the resort. Children are permitted and some of the amenities found within these locations include heated indoor pools, saunas, fitness facilities, organic menus, excursions to nearby sights and even in-house babysitters. Thus, there is little left to the imagination in terms of luxury here.

Due to the high altitudes associated with Saalbach Hinterglemm, the skiing season is quite long compared to other sites within Austria. During most years, the season runs from late October until early May (although conditions conducive to skiing have even stretches as far as early June.
