Zanzibar Holidays

Although many of us are not entirely familiar with the semi-autonomous country of Zanzibar, this destination is nonetheless an amazing region to enjoy a holiday abroad. Zanzibar is actually an archipelago of islands found off of the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Although technically controlled by nearby Tanzania, this country enjoys its own culture, history and attractions. Let's have a brief overview of what you can expect upon your arrival.

Airports and Flights

Having opened in 2011, Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) is one of the newest airports in the world. It is found only 5 kilometres east of the capital of Zanzibar City. Flights from Europe, the Middle East and Africa are all offered here. Some airlines which utilise this Zanzibar International Airport include:

  • Alitalia
  • Kenya Airways
  • LOT Polish Airlines
  • Jetairfly
  • Condor
  • FastJet

As we have seen, there are no direct flights from the United Kingdom. You will therefore require a connection from another airport in Europe.

Natural Attractions

Zanzibar is known for its wide array of flora and fauna. Although there appear to be examples of this trait around every corner, anyone interested in learning more should visit Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. This is the largest natural park in the entire archipelago. More than 40 species of birds and more than 50 different types of butterflies can be found here; many entirely unique to the region. There is also the myth that the now-extinct Zanzibar leopard still roams these parts although the last sighting was in 2003. There are numerous guided tours available for those who are interested.

Beaches

The beaches here have to be seen to be believed. As Zanzibar is not frequented by nearly as many tourists when compared to other parts of Africa, finding a secluded cove or an empty stretch of sand is much more of a reality. Some top spots include Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe, Kizimkazi, Bwejuu and Dongwe. Whether you are arriving here for a honeymoon or to enjoy a bit of nature, these and other locations will not disappoint.

History and Culture

Having once been ruled by the British Empire, the roots of Zanzibar are as unique as they are interesting. Many architectural examples of this melange can be seen. The Old Fort of Zanzibar, the House of Wonders (a large museum), Persian baths located in the town of Hamamni and the Peace Memorial Museum are all fine examples of this one-of-a-kind past.

When Should You Visit?

You can visit Zanzibar during any time of the year. It is not affected by the monsoon season nearly as much as other regions. As there are fewer tourists arriving here, you will rarely have to worry about congestion or no vacancies at hotel and resorts. As this can be quite a long flight from the United Kingdom (considering the European connections)., be sure to plan ahead and make reservations well ahead of when you intend to leave.
