Visiting Magnificent Malta

Visiting Magnificent Malta

Malta is an island-nation located in the central Mediterranean Sea not far from the shores of Italy and Sicily.  It is actually one of the world's tiniest and densely populated regions with a population approaching 500,000.  This number increases dramatically during the tourist season when many are looking to take advantage of cheap flights, bargain hotels and all-inclusive holidays.  So, what does this gem of the sea have to offer?

Cheap Flights to Malta

Malta International Airport (MLA) is the only airport serving the island.  Conveniently, it is found only five kilometres from the capital city of Valletta.  It was first opened in 1992 and currently has the capacity to handle nearly 340,000 annual passengers arriving from London Gatwick Airport alone.  As an example, flight times from London  to Malta average just over three hours while connecting departures will naturally incur more travel time.  Some common airlines served here include:

  • British Airways
  • Easyjet
  • Iberia Express
  • Lufthansa
  • Ryanair
  • Thomas Cook Airlines
  • Thompson Airways

Making a reservation in advance can help to provide bargains and cheap flights while package holiday deals are another way to save even more money on travel costs.

What to do in Malta Upon Arrival

Much like any Mediterranean destination, Malta is known for its beaches.  However, keep in mind that the sun can be quite overwhelming in the spring and summer months.  If you are sensitive, be sure to bring an adequate amount of sunblock.  A handful of the top beaches include Golden Bay, The Blue Lagoon, St. Peter's Pool, Melliha Bay and Mgarr ix Xini.  Golden Bay and the Blue Lagoon are found quite close to most major hotels (Castille Hotel Valletta Grand Harbour Hotel) while other locations offer a bit more seclusion to avoid larger crowds.

Besides the tranquil waters, Malta offers other attractions which are sure to please both children and adults alike.  This is an island rich in history; some dating back to pre-Roman times.  So, the Hypogeum of Hal-Saflieni, Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and the Megalithic Temples of Malta are all amazing windows into the past.  Other stunning examples of traditional Maltese architecture can be found in structures such as Fort Chambray, the Valletta Royal Opera House and Fort Ricasoli.  For those who desire a more modern appeal, there are numerous retail centres located within the capital.  Destinations such as The Embassy Shopping Complex and Centre will provide local goods alongside brand name items.  Be sure not to miss the many high-end restaurants that will offer up a taste of the local cuisine as well!

Malta could very well represent the true Mediterranean dream in terms of all-inclusive holidays and truly amazing weather conditions.  Although this island is known for its luxurious hotels, there are also boutique and private properties which can boast a decidedly more personal environment should you want to experience the more traditional side of this island-nation.
