Crete Package Holidays

Crete Package Holidays

Crete is the largest and most populated of all of the Greek islands.  With a population approaching 650,000 residents, it is also a famous location for both work and play.  Some major cities include Heraklion, Chania, Sitia and Rethymno.  These urban districts are then punctuated by stunning beaches and amazing examples of nature.  When we consider that Crete enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year, it is easy to see why so many tourists choose package holidays to this region.  Let us take a look at some must-known travel details below.

Flights and Airlines

The major airport serving Crete is Heraklion International Airport (HER).  It is the main hub for those arriving here from other international locations.  AS it is found only 5 kilometres east of the capital city itself, transportation is generally quite simple.  Shuttle buses, taxis and car hire services are all options here.  A handful of major air carriers which serve this airport include:

  • British Airways
  • easyJet
  • Ryanair
  • Air Berlin
  • Vueling
  • Thomas Cook Airlines

There are two additional airports found upon the islands of Chania and Sitia.  Please note that these are generally for short-haul flights.  Still, there can be a number o bargains to be found on occasion while last-minute needs can be catered to during the off season.

Crete Hotels and Accommodations

As should not be surprising, the bulk of the hotels found here are located in major cities such as Heraklion.  Elounda Beach Hotel, the Blue Palace Resort and Spa and St. Nicholas Bay Resort Hotel are all excellent properties.  Some of these are also located quite close to the beach; ideal for those who enjoy the surf and the sand.  It is also worth noting that many travel suppliers will offer package holidays with the price of these hotels included.  This is a great option for those looking for bargains during their stay.  Hostels and boutique properties are alternatives for anyone who wishes to avoid the throngs of tourists.

Crete Attractions

The ancient temple of Knossos is perhaps the most famous site here and it is perfect for fans of history.  However, immaculate shores such as those found at Elafonisi should never be missed.  Spinalonga is another pristine location.  Many companies offer glass-bottom boat tours as well as the rental of surf boards and jet skis.  Other natural attractions here include     the Lefka Ori nature preserve, the Aquaworld Aquarium, the rocky coves at Souda Bay and a more mountainous region of the island known as Dikti.

It is best to visit between the late autumn and the middle spring.  This is considered to be the off season in regards to tourists.  Also, the temperatures are much more agreeable when compared to the height of the summer.
