Located on the wets coast of the United States, the city of San Francisco is considered to be the cultural capital of northern California. It is currently home to more than 800,000 residents and experts expect this number to reach one million by the year 2030. Partially due to an amenable climate and largely the result of a very eclectic culture, San Francisco is also visited by millions of individuals from around the world each and every year. Let's take a look at some basic facts about this metropolitan hub as well as what you can expect if you plan on travelling here.
As mentioned previously, one of the most attractive features of this city is its climate. As opposed to other Californian locations such as Las Angeles, San Francisco is defined by moderate temperatures. So, summers here are not too hot while winters tend to be associated with mild conditions. While rain does indeed fall in the autumn, the months between May and July are normally associated with truly glorious conditions.
No one can argue that the most famous attraction of this city is the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge. Spanning an incredible 1.6 kilometres, the Art Deco style of this structure immediately draws one's attention towards the skyline. It is also possible to walk across the bridge thanks to a pedestrian path. Be sure to being your camera along, as you should always snap a few pictures of this majestic giant.
Alcatraz Island is another sight to behold; particularly if you are a fan of history. This location served as a military base before it was converted into what many considered to be one of the most secure prisons in existence. The prison itself is now shut and you can enjoy localised tours provided by qualified guides.
If you are in the mood for eclectic food and a multitude of cultures, be sure to head on over to Fisherman's Wharf. What was once a small market for traders to sell their goods has now been transformed into a massive open-air festival. It is thought that Fisherman's Wharf is the busiest tourist area within the city, and for good reason. Whether you are looking to pick up a few gifts or you hope to take a walk through nearby Chinatown, this attractive hub will certainly not disappoint.
Thanks to the pleasant weather associated with San Francisco, Golden Gate Park is another must-see attraction. As you have likely already guessed, this park provides stunning views of the nearby bridge. As it is no less than 1,000 acres in size, it can be the perfect way to wile away a few days with the family or to take a picnic. There are regular festivals held here in the evening and sculptures can be seen throughout its confines. Joggers and bicyclists are also avid fans of this park.
We have already mentioned several times that the weather here is pleasant throughout the year. However, you still need to take into account the number of tourists. This will usually affect hotel rates as well as flight accommodations. The majority of visitors (unsurprisingly) arrive here during the height of the summer. Please note that this also includes those who are looking to escape the heat of more southerly cities such as Los Angeles. So, it could be a better idea to book a trip during the early autumn or in the middle of spring.
Of course, always keep an eye on exchange rates so that you can receive the most for your money. It is best to utilise your bank before you leave as opposed to an airport-based service; these locations are known to charge very high commissions. If you have the possibility, rent a vehicle during your stay. There is a great deal to see just outside of the city such as the famous Pacific Coast Highway. You could also opt to take a trip inland to visit one of the numerous national parks to be found close by. Regardless of your desires, there is no doubt that San Francisco will not let you down.
