History of Vienna |
 |
 |
 |
| |
Throughout the years, Vienna was centre of a multi-nation empire,
and to this day has remains the same for a large part of Europe.
Due to it's ideal position at the heart of the European mainland,
Vienna has been the jewel in the crown for a multitude of conquerors;
every power of any consequence tried to take it, with varying success.
The Celts were settled here in Vienna, so did the Romans and the Babenbergs
who laid the first formal foundations and the Hapsburgs made it the
centre of their vast empire for centuries.
The city of Vienna has a a population of two million it was the fourth
largest city in the world, head of a multi-nation realm of 55 million
and an administration which respected the individual nations' idiosyncrasies
and of which, 150 years later, Umberto Eco would say it might serve
European union as a paragon.
The end of World War I left the country a small, poor republic with
an overblown capital. With the Cold War, Vienna became the western
world's most easterly outpost not to be engulfed in the Iron Curtain.
The Austrians made substantial reparations for the Third Reich war
crimes and elected Bruno Kreisky,a Jewish socialist chancellor.
In 1957, the IAEO established itself here, in 1965 OPEC followed,
UNIDO in 1967, and in 1979 the United Nations Organization made Vienna
its third headquarters today, the only one in an EU capital.
