The Birth of Frankfurt

The birth of Frankfurt can be traced back to 3000 years before Christ was born. It was found that grain was planted on Cathedral Hill, an area today that borders the Römer and the Cathedral. Then, later, the area was settled, which the remains of wooden structures verify. Until the end of the eighth century, the Cathedral Hill was a small island surrounded by water, swampland and moor.

Frankfurt's history including it's Roman occupation has no written material to substantiate this, which is a shame. The Roman armies had conquered large parts of Germania around this time Some of these occupied areas after 83 AD also included the Rhine-Main area. A little way from Frankfurt,Roman castles were built in Nida west of Heddernheim and Friedberg, . A type of military supply base was located on Frankfurt's Cathedral Hill. This, as well as the castles, lost its function when the Roman garrisons were transferred to the Limes in 110 AD. After the Romans departed along with so of their building, the hill was used again for another civilian settlement. If you visit the the Frankfurt Museum for Pre- and Early History you will see evidence of this.
