About Copenhagen |
 |
 |
 |
| |
Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen sums up this city perfectly. This
Danish city is packed with unmissable sights and attractions that
it can be tricky to fit them all into a short visit.
Copenhagen may be compact, but it is still rather ambitious to attempt
to see everything on foot over one weekend - and imagine if you didn't
get to see the Little Mermaid, or forgot about Amalienborg Slot!
The best way to make sure that you don't miss any of Copenhagen's
major sights and landmarks is to take one of the numerous organised
tours of the city, either by bus, bike or boat.

Eating in Copenhagen |
 |
 |
 |
| |
The menus of the Copenhagen eating houses are widely varied, from
marinated reindeer, to fresh-caught lobster; from red hot Thai curries,
to traditional frikadeller (Danish meat balls); from sushi to smørrebrød
If you are a food lover, be prepared to leave Copenhagen happier,
but perhaps slightly heavier.
Over the past few years a breathtaking array of inventive, modern
and stylish new restaurants has opened in the city (many with a French,
fusion or Modern Italian influence), transforming it into a major
gourmet destination. Michelin stars duly rained from the sky, but
that doesn't mean that a meal out here need necessarily break the
bank.
Copenhagen offers a wealth of more affordable eateries serving both
traditional Danish food and international cuisines, many of which
make full use of the superb fresh ingredients available locally.
The best of Copenhagen's restaurants, whether expensive or cheap,
share one thing in common, they appreciate that a great evening out
requires not just good food, but stylish surroundings and a cosy atmosphere,
two things that this design conscious city and cosiness experts, the
Danes, do best of all.

Shopping in Copenhagen |
 |
 |
 |
| |
Shoppers in Denmark can be tempted by more than figures of the Little
Mermaid and postcards of Queen Margrethe II.
The artists and craftsmen of Denmark, often working with traditional
methods and styles, are admired internationally for their work. Classic
tableware from Royal Copenhagen Porcelain and the simple but beautiful
jewellery from Georg Jensen are two good examples of Danish art and
craft.
Recently, Copenhagen's fashion designers have emerged as world leaders,
and there are now Danish designers working in several of the world's
top fashion houses in Paris, Milan, London and New York. A result
of this is that Copenhagen's shops boast an abundance of fresh fashion
talent, many based in and around the city's fashion streets.
Within the centre of Copenhagen is Royal Copenhagen Antiques, on Amagertorv,
with impressive offerings of porcelain, silver and glassware.
Kompagnistræde is home to another cluster of antique shops. Sølvkælderen's
silverware, Antik & Kunst's porcelain and china, Inuit Gallerie's
fascinating collection of Greenlander artifacts and Pinnau Antik's
books, prints and comics are all collectors' havens.

Copenhagen History |
 |
 |
 |
| |
The one thousand year history of Copenhagen is full of kings, inspirational
artists and celebrated designers who's influence can still be seen
in the medieval streets, 17th-Century canals and modernist architecture
of Copenhagen.
Copenhagen's birth was that of a humble fishing village, to its heyday
as the glittering capital of the Danish Empire, to its current position
as one of the world's premier design capitals and Scandinavia's pre-eminent
city, the stories and characters of Copenhagen's history are there
to be discovered in its sumptuous palaces, copper-roofed town houses
and atmospheric cobbled squares.
Though Copenhagen is a bustling metropolis, it always kept in touch
with it's past. With a past as rich and fascinating as this, that's
hardly a surprise.
